WORLD War III has erupted between ASHLEE SIMPSON and ex-hubby PETE WENTZ over the blonde beauty’s hard partying, sources say.

Rocker Pete, 33, believes Ashlee, 28, is spiraling out of control, and he’s considering fighting for pri­mary custody of their 4-year-old son, Bronx Mowgli, the sources add.

It’s a dramatic role reversal for the once friendly couple whose nearly three-year marriage ended in 2011 when Ashlee â€" Jessica Simpson’s little sister â€" filed for divorce over Pete’s raging drug habit.

“ASHLEE HAS BEEN DRINKING LIKE a fish, and she’s a fixture on the club and house-party scene,” said an in­sider.

Meanwhile, Pete seems to have gotten his life in order. His band, Fall Out Boy, has reunited with a new album coming out and a tour on the docket, and he’s settled into a relationship with model Meagan Camper.

But “Pete is at his wit’s end over Ashlee,” continued the insider. “He’s angry that she hasn’t been maintain­ing Bronx’s sleeping schedule and that she sometimes uses the TV as his ‘baby sitter.’”

Wentz wants to hash out a private, new custody arrangement with him as primary caregiver, said the insider.

“But Ashlee is resisting, and it could get ugly. Pete says that if Ashlee doesn’t change her partying ways or agree to his custody de­mands, he’ll go to court. And having her dirty laun­dry aired in public would be very embarrassing for Ashlee.”

As The ENQUIRER has reported, the super skinny “Pieces of Me” singer has been stressed out over her parents’ divorce as well as her father Joe’s alleged admission that he’s gay, which he has denied.

She raised fears among her friends and family recently after she was re­portedly spotted downing drinks at Pink Taco in Los Angeles. But Ashlee’s problems with booze go back to 2005, when she was caught on camera drunk and misbehaving at a Toronto area Mc­Donald’s. She was also reportedly guzzling eight to 10 bottles of wine a week after her marriage bustup.

At the time, The ENQUIRER re­ported that Pete had been taking the sleeping pill Ambien, the sedative Xanax and painkiller OxyContin, and Ashlee had concerns about Bronx’s safety when Pete was watching him.

Despite that, Ashlee and Pete patched up their differences, and she even struck up a friendship with his girlfriend, Meagan.

But things deteriorated after Ash­lee made plans to move to New York City to live with her now-ex-boyfriend, ac­tor Vincent Piazza of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” and Pete didn’t want to commute from L.A. to see Bronx.

“In the past, it was Ashlee push­ing Pete to go to rehab, but now it could be the other way around,” said the source. “Pete has been warning Ashlee that if she doesn’t pull herself together, he’s going to take Bronx away for his own well-being. But Ashlee doesn’t seem to be taking his threats seriously.”
