Selena Gomezâs performance of her new single âCome ânâ Get Itâ at the MTV Movie Awards was met with cheering crowds, but apparently not everyone was entertained.
The 20-year-old star, who sported traditional Hindu garb and the religious bindi symbol on her forehead during Sunday's performance, is under fire this week for her costume, India.com reported on Tuesday.
Officials at the Universal Society of Hinduism are demanding an apology from Gomez, calling her choice of costume âinsensitive.â They have requested the star discontinue the use of the garb during her upcoming âStars Danceâ world tour, set to kick off this August.
Hindu statesman, Rajan Zed, called Gomezâs use of the bindi as a fashion accessory inappropriate and disrespectful, citing its ancient role and religious significance. It's also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame.
Zed didn't comment on the sexual nature of the starâs lyrics.
Gomez has yet to comment on the requested apology, but did tweet her concerns regarding her MTV Movie Awards performance.
âCome ânâ Get Itâ is the first single off Gomezâs fourth studio album of the same name.Â
