During a recent appearance on Ellen, the singer danced around his relationship and breakup with Katy Perry.
"It was a very private relationship going in," he said. "It was a private relationship during and it's a private relationship, still."
Mayer admitted his past candidness (calling Jessica Simpson "sexual napalm," for example) makes him ripe for tabloid fodder but he's committed to living life a different way. "I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given but I have finally learned how to put a wall between one thing and the other," he added. "I've been much happier since then."
So what about Perry? "I'm on the same journey as everyone else," was all Mayer would say on the subject. "Coupling is a tricky thing."
