Glastonbury Festival 2013: Mumford and Sons close the festival on the Pyramid stage

Mumford and Sons closed Glastonbury festival with their first ever headline set on the Pyramid stage.

Doubt had been cast over the band's appearance at Worthy Farm, after bass player Ted Dwane had surgery for a blood clot on his brain in June.

The musician seemed in good health as he took to the stage on Sunday was greeted by large cheers from the crowds, ahead of the band's headline set.

The band opened with Lovers' Eyes before singing I Will Wait, which is their only UK top 20 hit.

Fans held candles aloft as the night set in, with the band's country-style tunes giving rise to impromptu hoe downs in front of the stage as they played hits like Little Lion Man and I Will Wait.

Hollywood star Carey Mulligan, who is married to band member Marcus Mumford, was among those watching the band backstage.

Mumford told the audience: 'I would like to give a massive thank you to Michael Eavis and his family for having us here and letting us be complete idiots in his field for a couple of days.'

They closed their set by playing the Joe Cocker version of A Little Help From My Friends, for which they were joined on stage by Vampire Weekend, The Vaccines and folk singers The Staves.

Performances by Editors, The xx and Vampire Weekend rounded off the festival's entertainment.

Country legend Kenny Rogers looked thrilled to have performed at the festival to a huge reception from music fans.

Meanwhile folk superstars Mumford & Sons were given star billing to close the festival - which they did to raucous applause.

A bit of elegance and tranquility - but definite musical emotion - was provided on Sunday afternoon with an incredible set by musician Rufus Wainwright.

He played piano and belted out some of his biggest hits to the delight of the crowds.

And giving a bit of a blast of the 90s on Sunday was the Smashing Pumpkins who hit out their hits to the crowds.

Sir Bruce Forsyth teased the Rolling Stones during his Glastonbury gig.

The 85-year-old performed a host of classic songs on Sunday including Singin' In The Rain and a medley tribute to Sammy Davis Junior.

Walking on stage to the Strictly Come Dancing theme, he receiving a huge ovation.

Wearing a white shirt, red waistcoat and black bow tie, he joked: 'How long have I got, an hour? The Rolling Stones got two.

'Did you see the Stones. I'm glad the boys did well. I mean, they're just kids.

'That Mick Jagger, I feel sorry for him. After all these years he still can't get no Satisfaction.'

Editors also performed on Sunday giving a rousing performance of their darkly anthemic tracks and including some new material.

Earlier in the course of the festival, music giants from all Genres performed to the crowds with Alex Turner and his band the Arctic Monkeys gave a legendary performance at the festival.

Rita Ora caused a stir early in the festival proceedings with a storming show on the Friday afternoon in an attention grabbing outfit.
