DOCTOR Who star Matt Smith is quitting as the Time Lord â" and he could regenerate into a woman.
The BBC last night confirmed The Sunâs TV Biz exclusive from March, when we revealed the actor, 30, would leave in the Christmas special.
Sources said several female stars are in the running to be the showâs 12th Time Lord.
An insider said: âAll actors, no matter their sex or race, will be considered. If they are good enough, the part is theirs.â
Beeb bosses had to admit Mattâs exit after a leaked email from its commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, to clients gave the game away.
The mail, sent on Friday, told of plans to air 12 new episodes from August 2014. Crucially, it said: âThis will give the new Doctor a chance to develop with the audience (apologies for this spoiler if you didnât know).â
Matt said last night: âDoctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke. That is largely down to the cast, crew and fans. Itâs been an honour to follow the legacy of brilliant actors and helm the Tardis. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore (home of the Doctorâs tomb) calls.â
Show boss Steven Moffat, 51, paid tribute to Matt, who took over from David Tennant in 2010, describing him as âfunny, surprising and one of the nicest, hardest-working actors Iâve knownâ.
He added: âThis Christmas prepare for your hearts to break as we say goodbye to Number 11. Thank you Matt, bow ties were never cooler.
âNow Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years thatâs still so exciting!â
