Jade Richards made it third time lucky on Saturday night when she stunned the X Facor juding panel with a moving rendition of Bruno Mars hit When I Was Your Man.

Having made it all the way to Kelly Rowland's Miami home during the judges house's stage of the competition, she was left bitterly disappointed when she wasn't selected for the live shows.

The Fife teenager admitted she'd been 'working in supermarkets' since her last appearance on the show in 2012.

'I think you've got your mojo back - it was fantastic audition,' raved Louis.

'I'd personally love to mentor you,' said a clearly impressed Nicole.

The 23-year-old was sent off with four yeses, but she wasn't the only familiar face on the show.

Amy Mottram also returned after losing out on last year's wildcard to eventual finalist Christopher Maloney.

'I think you're incredibly brave to come back again,' said Gary.

I think your so so secure - you're a star,' added Nicole.

Dolly Rockers also returned with a version of Beyonce hit End of Time and got four yeses for their troubles before Dubliner Melanie Mccabe made her fourth appearance on the show.

In 2011 she made it to judges house's but failed to make the final cut when Kelly Rowland named her final three.

'I think I wasn't myself, I feel more confident this year.' she told the judges.

Indeed, her performance of Rihanna's Diamonds reduced the panel to silence.

'That was absolutely brilliant, the best audtion of the day by a mile,' raved Gary.

'It was very honest,' said an impressed Nicole.

'When you sing you light up,' agreed Sharon.

Irishman Louis was clearly affected by the audition, and with a quivering voice he said:  'I know her family need this, I know you need this and I really want it for you. I really, really want you to do well.'

He added: 'I'm saying as very big yes...Melanie this is your time - go for it.'

After an eventful curtain-raiser, episode 2 kicked off in Manchester, where an array of hopefuls were hoping to impress judges Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh.

Chloe O'Gorman was first up, impressing the judges after admitting she's been waiting 'since I was six' to appear on the show.

The successful start continued with 17-year-old Barclay Beales, who strolled in with his acoustic guitar and performed a unique, yodelled rendition of One Direction hit What Makes You Beautiful  that had Nicole up on her feet.

'Who thought yodelling could be so hot!' she screamed.

Like Chloe, Barclay got four yeses – but the promising start proved to be deceiving.

Thomas came next. The mild-mannered 54-year-old from Leeds perplexed the judges when he walked in carrying a laptop that contained his 'backing track.'

The jobbing DJ claimed he got 'ten out of ten' for his sets and dutifully offered the panel feedback sheets before attempting a rendition of Stevie Wonder hit Lovely.

Unfortunately for Thomas, his rather unique interpretation of the hit failed to impress the judges – particularly Gary, who gave his performance a zero.

Birmingham based housekeeper Relley Clarke arrived at her audition with her supportive dad before busting into Swedish House Mafia hit Don't You Worry Child.

As her dad looked on proudly, she sung about 'looking into her father's eyes' as the judges watched in silence.

The performance got a round of applause from the foursome, with Gary admitting:  'I didn't expect such a big voice to come from a small person.'

'No more housekeeping for you my love,' added Nicole, giving her a fourth yes.

'Do you know how long I've waited for this!' she said tearfully, embracing the judges.

'See you at the arena,' said Gary.

White van driver Shelley Smith offered a version of Aretha Franklin's You Make me Feel, but her 'Mariah Carey' moves earned her a criticism from Sharon.

'A lot of your moves are clichĂ© but I think you've got a lot of potential,' she said.

Next up came Ryan Mathie, a council worker from Hull.

Accompanied by his guitar he reduced the girlfriend who'd accompanied him with a moving rendition of Jolean.

'You have this country, soulfulness to your voice…' cooed Nicole.

'Get ready for the next round,' added Louis after the teenager got four yeses on a productive day for the judging panel.

Tree surgeon Matthew failed to impress with a version of Labrynth hit Beneath You're Beautiful, despite Sharon yelling:  'I love a good surgeon!'

After being sent on his way with a resounding thumbs down, Morrison's worker Abi Alton, 18, from Middlesbrough came with dad her father, who she confessed was her 'roadie' and 'best friend.'

'I'd love to make him proud,' she said.

Having 'gigged' since she was 14, an intitially nervous Abi performed a stunning version of Dixie Chicks hit travelling Soldier that belied her age and had hard to please Gary shaking his head in wonder.

'Abi, you are totally what this show needs,' he said. 'You could've projected a bit more... but I was drawn in. well done.'

However, Louis wasn't sure.

'I'm not sure you're right for this show,' he said. 'I don't think she can project on a Saturday night. Louis.

'We see so many people who have no sense of themselves, but you have a sense of yourself,' gushed Sharon.

With a hint of caution, Nicole added: 'Your next performance will be in 4,000 people. Hopefully you can project to all those people.

Despite Louis' misgivings he agreed to 'give her a chance' and she went through to the live auditions with a unanimous thumbs up.

'I'm overwhelmed,' she said afterwards, embracing her dad.

Colin Stacey, 45, added a touch of comedy to proceedings by turning up with a picture of his beloved cat, Patch.

'He knows talent,' the South-East London native told Dermot O'Leary.

'How do you know he likes your singing?' asked Gary when he walked into the audition room brandishing the framed portrait.

'He stays in the room.' Colin replied before breaking into a rendition of Adele's Someone Like You.

With the framed picture resting at his feet, Colin swayed from side to side as he offered a distinctive version of the classic track - with some vocal assistance from Gary and Nicole.

'I don't know if you have a  voice in there,' the Take That star told him.

'I've taken six singing lessons,' Colin insisted.

'I think singing should be a hobby, you and your cat,' advised Louis.

Saturday's show also saw the return of more familiar faces.
