His Emmy Award for Best Actor was one of the biggest surprises at this year's Emmy Awards.

The Newsroom's Jeff Daniels looked thrilled with the unexpected award, which had been hotly tipped to go to Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston.

On accepting the gong, the actor said: 'I didn't expect this, I usually don't win anything.'

Jeff noted that he'd also received an age 50-plus acting honor from the American Association of Retired Persons.

'With all due respect to the AARP, this is even better,' Daniels said.

Jeff plays an idealistic star TV anchorman in HBO political drama series The Newsroom.

The award had been expected to go to Bryan Cranston, with presenter Claire Danes caught off guard when she almost congratulated the actor on having won the award.

'I've still got my fingers crossed for my category,' Cranston retorted.

However Breaking Bad still won the category of best drama series and Cranston remains tipped to scoop the award next year.

For many, the most exciting part of the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards was the battle between Netflix's House of Cards and Breaking Bad, as well as long-running show Mad Men.

Breaking Bad was tipped by the bookies to clean up at the Emmys, but only one show, Behind The Candelabra, received more than three awards.

While Breaking Bad's Anna Gunn had a promising start winning Best Supporting Actress, her co-star Aaron Paul was also snubbed on the night, missing out on an individual award.
